À Travers Le Verre 1 —«a través del vidrio»— se inscribe en la práctica de Pénélope Barbier de pintar las estaciones y el mundo natural como estados de ánimo. Donde sus series Automnes et fantômes y Couchers de Soleil et Cavaliers retienen la memoria y el movimiento, esta obra se vuelca sobre la percepción misma: la visión filtrada, suavizada, sostenida a una ligera distancia. A Barbier le interesa menos la escena que la atmósfera que la rodea y aquello que el ojo completa cuando la vista es parcial.
La pintura está construida con óleo y pigmentos naturales sobre lienzo, un método que otorga a la superficie una variación orgánica y una profundidad lenta, por capas. Los pigmentos naturales se desplazan sutilmente por el campo pictórico y aportan una fragilidad que acompaña la idea de mirar a través de una barrera transparente. Con 60 por 50 centímetros conserva un carácter íntimo y recompensa la mirada cercana, donde sus transiciones tonales se hacen evidentes.
