Museo Jumex: The Autumn Season

Museo Jumex autumn season, Mexico City

Events & Exhibitions · Mexico City

Museo Jumex closed two shows on 30 August and opens three that run to 7 February 2027. The whole autumn programme lands in a six-week window, and then holds for four months.

What is changing

Museo Jumex sits in Plaza Carso in Polanco, in a David Chipperfield building, and it is the single most consequential contemporary art institution in Mexico. Its programme turns over twice a year, and this is the turn.

Two exhibitions ended on Sunday 30 August. Objects of Glory: Iconic Moments in the History of Football had been up since 10 June; Diffuse Visions since 7 March. Then the museum opens three new shows across four weeks, and every one of them runs to 7 February 2027 — the same closing date.

Richard Prince: Tell Me Everything

Opening 26 September, this is the largest institutional exhibition in Mexico City this autumn. Prince is among the most argued-about American artists of the last fifty years — the rephotographed Marlboro cowboys, the Nurse paintings, the joke paintings, and the appropriation cases that followed them. Whatever position you hold on that work, a survey of it at this scale does not come to Mexico often.

For a collector, an appropriation-art survey is a useful thing to walk through before buying anything in an edition. It is a long argument about what originality is worth, staged in one room.

Two more on 16 October

Álvaro Urbano’s Helen and Raúl Silva’s Gateway open the same day. Urbano is a Spanish artist who builds theatrical, botanical installations that treat an exhibition space as somewhere abandoned and then reoccupied. Both run to 7 February 2027.

From 16 October the museum holds three concurrent shows for nearly four months — an unusually long, stable programme. If you are planning a trip and cannot come in September, nothing is lost.

When to go

26 SepPrince opens
16 Octtwo more open
7 Feball three close

Two sensible windows, now that the August shows have closed. Late September, which pairs Prince with the galleries that opened for GAMA Week on 3 September. Or February, when all three Jumex shows are still up and Mexico City Art Week (3–7 February 2027) brings the fairs to town. February is the densest, and the most expensive.
