Museo Tamayo exhibitions, Mexico City

Events & Exhibitions · Mexico City

Museo Tamayo is running five exhibitions at once, and they end on five different dates spread from September 2026 to February 2027. Which month you visit decides what you see.

Five shows, five closing dates

Museo Tamayo was built in 1981 to hold Rufino Tamayo’s own collection of international modern art, and it has since become one of the city’s most consistent contemporary programmes. Right now it is unusually full — five exhibitions, staggered so that the building never empties.

Tamayo, Nieto, Toledo: Los años en París

Opened 20 August and running to 15 February 2027, this is the show to see if you only see one. It puts Rufino Tamayo, Rodolfo Nieto and Francisco Toledo together around their years in Paris — three Oaxacan artists across three generations, each of whom went to Europe and came back with something that did not look European.

It is also the show that rhymes with what is happening in the galleries. Galería de Arte Mexicano opens a Francisco Toledo and Jan Hendrix pairing on 3 September, running to 15 January 2027. For four months you can see Toledo in a museum survey and in a commercial gallery in the same week.

Ante el eclipse

Ante el eclipse: Arqueologías del arte en México closes 18 October. It reads the history of art in Mexico as an archaeology — layers rather than a line. For anyone trying to understand why Mexican contemporary art looks the way it does, it is more useful than a survey.

What you see, month by month

September

All five open. The only month that is true. Horizontes closes on the 20th and Fátima Rodrigo on the 27th.

October

Three remain, and Ante el eclipse closes on the 18th. After that, two.

November and December

Two: the architecture show and the Paris show. A quieter, better-paced visit.

January and February

Arquitectura y cosmotécnica closes 3 January; the Paris show holds to 15 February and is open through Art Week.
