Molly van Amerongen builds quiet, atmospheric abstractions in oil and marble dust on wood, and Early Surprise sits squarely in that practice — color and texture held in a register closer to a landscape of feeling than of place. The marble dust gives the oil a granular, mineral body, and van Amerongen works it on a wooden panel rather than canvas, so the surface reads as worked matter more than image. Fields of color settle and bleed into one another at soft edges, the small 30-centimeter format pulling the eye in close to where the texture lives.
