The Armory Show returns to New York this autumn with a change worth noting: the fair has moved to late September, running 24–27 September 2026 at the Javits Center, 655 W. 34th Street. Roughly 230 galleries from more than 30 countries will exhibit.
What is different this year
The shift to a later slot in September gives the fair more room ahead of the autumn auction season, and it changes who is in town. For collectors, a later Armory means the week reads less like a summer coda and more like the opening of the autumn market.
The curated Platform and Focus sections this year centre on artists living and working across the Caribbean, alongside first-generation North American artists whose practices are shaped by the Caribbean diaspora. If you follow emerging work from Latin America and the wider Americas, those two sections are where to start rather than where to finish.
How to walk a fair of this size
Two hundred and thirty galleries is more than anyone sees properly in a day. The collectors who get the most out of large fairs tend to do the same three things.
They pick a thesis before they arrive. A medium, a region, a generation — something narrow enough to make most booths skippable. Wandering produces fatigue, not discoveries.
They walk the curated sections first, while their eye is fresh. Platform and Focus are selected rather than sold into, so the hit rate is higher and the work is easier to place in context.
They ask what else is in the back. What hangs on a booth wall is chosen for the fair. The works that suit a specific collector are often in the viewing room or on a phone.
Reading a fair as an emerging-art collector
A fair is a compressed, expensive snapshot of what dealers believe will sell in the next twelve months. That makes it useful as a temperature check and unreliable as a discovery engine. The artists who are genuinely early rarely have a booth — they are in a group show, a curated section, or a gallery's second room.
If you are collecting emerging work, treat the fair as reconnaissance. Note the names that recur across booths, then follow them afterwards, when there is time to look properly and no one is standing beside you.
