Alyssa Tang

Alyssa Tang (Canada, 1996) is a multi-disciplinary designer, architect and artist. Primarily using charcoal and oil paint, Tang explores the human figure as her central motif, investigating the potential of abstracting and distorting the body. Her art delves into the materiality of flesh, muscle, and skin, capturing intricate textures and forms that convey profound emotive and expressive qualities, even in the absence of defined faces. This anonymity invites viewers into a more universal and introspective engagement with her work.

Artist Statement

"I approach the world through the body, using it to sense space and experience, guided by a search for emotional affect in body language. My work explores how the body speaks without words—emotions in figures folding inward, embracing, or falling apart. In my practice, the body is a vessel for inexpressible emotions and memories."

"Using oil and charcoal, I distort and reassemble figure fragments, moving beyond likeness to something elemental. This process reduces the body to flesh, a material free of gender, identity, or social implication, becoming both subject and object, open to multiple readings. Drawn to the body in motion, I avoid facial features or explicit identity signifiers to reach universal emotions. I am interested in the tension of opposing forces. I work until the image settles into a place where tenderness meets rupture and where the grotesque becomes a quiet space for reflection."
