Open Sky is the first painting in Aurora Kalos's "Non-Migratory Birds" series, her body of work about migration and the search for home. It sits close to the concerns her practice keeps returning to — figures held between states, the interior life under pressure — grounded here in the experience of forced migration.

Painted in oil on canvas, the work is dedicated to the first months of the war in Ukraine, when people asked for the sky to be closed and hoped for protection. Kalos renders that open sky as the moment of realizing it would stay open, the 70-centimeter format carrying the weight of the figure beneath it.
