Details
Scale belongs to the body of work where Alyssa Tang — a Canadian-Chinese artist, architect, and designer based in Hong Kong — treats the human figure as a study in material and pressure. Alongside Bound and Race, it holds the body in a state of proportion and psychological tension, the title pointing as much to balance and emphasis as to measurement.
Worked in oil and charcoal on canvas, the piece sets tonal weight against exposed line. The oil grounds it with density; the charcoal marks stay visible and unresolved, keeping the artist’s hand in view. The elongated horizontal format — 22.6 × 60 cm — compresses the field and pulls the eye slowly across, so small shifts in weight register.
