Art of NOMA is a contemporary art gallery built on a simple belief: that some of the most important artists of the next decade are working right now — and that discovering them should feel exciting, not exclusive.
The gallery was founded by Josh Stein and Carlos Algara, two lifelong art enthusiasts who had grown frustrated with an art world that often felt closed off: gatekept, overpriced, and disconnected from the people actually making and loving the work. They set out to build something different — a gallery rooted in genuine curatorial conviction, direct access, and a real point of view.
The owners
Art of NOMA belongs to two people, and you will meet both of them.
Carlos Algara is the eye. He lives in the studios, the openings and the conversations where new artists are found. He chooses the work, curates the shows and builds the relationships that bring each artist to Art of NOMA. When an artist joins the roster, or a collector wants to talk about a piece, Carlos is the person on the other end.
Josh Stein is the engine. He built the platform that carries the gallery to collectors around the world: this website, the Journal, the guide to what is on in the city and the partnerships that put the work in front of new people. Most of the stories you read here carry his name.
Together they own and run Art of NOMA: one always looking for the next artist worth knowing, the other making sure the world gets to see them.
What we do
We champion emerging contemporary artists and bring their original work to collectors around the world. The program spans original paintings, limited-edition prints, photography, and sculpture — each artist chosen for an authentic voice and a distinctive way of seeing the world. Based in Mexico City and connected to a global community of collectors, Art of NOMA sits at the center of one of the most dynamic art scenes in the world. Many of our artists are part of why Mexico City is becoming a global art capital.
How we think about collecting
We believe great collections begin with a reaction, not a rulebook — a single work that stays in your mind long after you’ve seen it. Whether you are acquiring your first piece or building an established collection, every work we represent is an original (or a signed limited edition), authenticated with a certificate of authenticity and shipped, fully insured, anywhere in the world.
Context matters, too. Through our Journal, we publish essays on the artists, ideas, and culture shaping contemporary art — because understanding the person behind a work makes the connection deeper and more lasting.
