The short answer
For an emerging artist, the gallery’s listed price is the price. There is rarely a second source to check it against. The tools below are useful, but most of them record auction results. A new work sold by a gallery does not show up in them.
The tools, compared
Prices are in US dollars, as found in October 2026. Vendors change plans often, and some figures come from secondary sources. Confirm on the vendor’s page before relying on any of them.
| Tool | What it does | What it costs | What it misses here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Artsy Price Database | Artist-level price data and market insights inside Artsy. | Free, according to Artsy, with no search limits. | We could not read Artsy’s own page when we checked. Confirm its coverage for the artist you care about. |
| Artnet Price Database | Searchable auction results. | Day pass (5 searches) $32.50. Thirty days (10 searches) $42.50. Expert plan $450 a year. Appraiser plan $1,175 a year. | Auction results only. Gallery sales are absent. |
| MutualArt | Auction results, artist alerts and performance graphs. | A free plan follows up to 15 artists. Paid plans: $24, $29 and $39 a month, or $2,499 a year for the top plan. | Mainly auction data. Higher plans add more history, more followed artists and extra services. |
| Artprice | A large auction database. | Paid. We have not verified the current tiers. | Auction results only. |
| Artfacts | Ranks artists by exhibition history, weighting the prestige and location of venues. | Pricing is not published. | It ranks careers, not prices. It depends on galleries reporting their shows and favors hubs such as New York, Berlin and London. |
| Limna | An app that estimates a price for primary-market paintings and photographs from the artist and the size. | Free to download, with in-app purchases. We could not find the amounts. | The artist needs at least one exhibition at a recognized institution. Accuracy has not been independently confirmed. |
What they miss for Mexican and Latin American emerging artists
Auction data covers only part of the market. Masterworks, a company that sells its own research and so has a stake, puts public auctions at about 35% of global market value in 2025. Treat the figure with that caveat.
The rest happens privately. At Zona Maco 2025, the gallery kurimanzutto reported works priced between $25,000 and $60,000, and others from $3,000. None of those sales appear in an auction database.
How to check a price honestly
- Ask us for the price history of that artist with Art of NOMA: the first prices, any change and the works already sold.
- Compare size, medium and edition with other works by the same artist in the catalogue.
- Look at what artists at a similar stage list for in galleries that publish prices.
- If the artist has an auction record, use a free tier to read it.
- Treat any automated estimate as a starting point for a question, not an answer.
