About this work

Karaoke is Taeko Nomiya at her most characteristic — a photographer drawn to collective ritual, here the karaoke room, where private feeling briefly becomes public performance. It belongs to the same body of work that moves between Japan and Mexico, finding intimacy in the shared moments that shape a city after dark.

Printed as a patient, atmospheric giclée on glossy 250 gsm photographic paper, the image lets light, shadow and reflection do the work, holding rich contrast across a surface that stays quiet rather than loud. The edition runs to 100 hand-numbered prints, each sealed with the artist's hanko, the traditional Japanese seal she uses in place of a signature.
