Mexico City has four museums that anchor its contemporary art scene: Museo Jumex, MUAC, Museo Tamayo and the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil. They sit in different parts of the city, they charge different amounts (one is free every day), and one of them is closed for installation until 9 November 2026. This guide gives the address, hours and admission of each as published on its own website on 27 October 2026, with a short note on what each museum is for. For what is on view this month, see our date-bound museum posts, linked below.

If you also want commercial galleries, our overview of art galleries in Mexico City covers them, and the What’s On page lists current exhibitions across the city. Our directory also lists the Museo de Arte Moderno, Ex Teresa Arte Actual and Laboratorio Arte Alameda; we did not read their own sites for this guide, so check them separately.
Museo Jumex: free entry in Nuevo Polanco
Museo Jumex is at Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra 303, in Colonia Granada. Its site says it opened to the public in November 2013 as the main platform of the Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo, an institution devoted to contemporary art that aimed to serve a broad public and to become a laboratory for experimentation. The visit page lists free admission with no reservation required, and says it is open Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 17:00, Saturday from 10:00 to 19:00 and Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00. It lists subway access at San Joaquín and Polanco, both on Line 7.
On 27 October its exhibitions menu listed Álvaro Urbano: Helen and Raúl Silva: Gateway, both from 16 October 2026 to 7 February 2027, and Richard Prince: Tell Me Everything, from 26 September 2026 to 7 February 2027, with The Gift of Tongues, an off-site exhibition, to follow from 27 November. Our post on Museo Jumex’s 2026–27 programme keeps the dates in one place.
MUAC: the university museum at Ciudad Universitaria
MUAC is at Insurgentes Sur 3000, in the Centro Cultural Universitario of the UNAM in Coyoacán. Its “About us” page says it opened its doors on 26 November 2008 as a public and university museum of contemporary art, and that its collection looks after works produced from 1952, the year Ciudad Universitaria was inaugurated, by artists based in Mexico.
The visit page lists new hours and costs from 1 August: general admission at the box office is MX$60, with a 50% discount for the UNAM community and for students and teachers from other institutions. Entry is free for UNAM students with a valid ID, children under 12, friends of the museum, INAPAM cardholders and others listed on the page. On Thursdays entry is free from 18:00 to 20:00, and on Sundays the general public gets 50% off. Its exhibitions page lists seven shows on 27 October, among them Desde el umbral (to 29 November 2026) and Minia Biabiany (to 14 February 2027). Our MUAC post follows the programme by date.
What should you know about Museo Tamayo’s closure?
Museo Tamayo is at Paseo de la Reforma 51, in the Bosque de Chapultepec. Its “About the museum” page says it was founded in Mexico City in 1981 by the artist Rufino Tamayo and his wife Olga Flores Rivas as a public space for the international art of its time, and that today it focuses on dialogues and ruptures between modern and contemporary art.
The important practical point is the closure. The visit page carries a notice that the museum is closed for installation and will stay closed until 9 November, because it is preparing the next exhibitions. Other pages on the same site still show opening hours and three exhibitions, with start dates from 23 July to 25 September 2026, so the site is not entirely consistent. Treat 9 November as the earliest reopening date and check the museum’s site or social accounts the week you plan to go. When it is open, the visit page lists Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, general admission of MX$95 and free entry on Sundays. Our post on Museo Tamayo’s shows through February 2027 tracks the exhibitions.
Museo Carrillo Gil: young art in San Ángel
The Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil is at Avenida Revolución 1608, in San Ángel. It is run through INBAL, and its “About” page says it was founded by Dr. Alvar Carrillo Gil and his wife Carmen Tejero de Carrillo Gil to house the collection they began in 1938; it opened on 30 August 1974. One of its exhibition pages describes the museum’s current identity as oriented towards promoting emerging practices and experimental languages.
The museum lists hours of Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:30. General admission is MX$70, and entry is free for students and teachers with a valid ID, children under 12, INAPAM cardholders and everyone on Sundays. Its current-exhibitions page lists the XLVI Encuentro Nacional de Arte Joven from 3 September 2026 to 10 January 2027, and El eterno retorno by Manuel Rocha Iturbide, which opened on 24 October and runs to 28 March 2027. Our post on the Museo Carrillo Gil’s shows to February 2027 covers the date-bound programme.
How do you plan a day around the museums?
Start from the days. All four museums are closed on Mondays, and all four are open on Sundays, which is also the day when the Tamayo and the Carrillo Gil are free, when Jumex is free as it is every day, and when MUAC takes 50% off. Saturday is the longest day at Jumex (until 19:00) and MUAC (until 20:00). Thursday evening is the time for MUAC, which stays open until 20:00 and is free from 18:00.
Then pick by neighbourhood rather than by name. Our directory places Jumex in Nuevo Polanco, Tamayo in Chapultepec, MUAC at Ciudad Universitaria and the Carrillo Gil in San Ángel, so choose one or two per day instead of trying for all four. Our guide to Mexico City museums this autumn combines them with dates.
Seeing institutional work is a good way to train your eye before you buy. If you want to compare it with original work that carries a price, every piece on our works page shows its price in pesos. Héroes Invisibles by Raúl Cerrillo is an original oil painting, 180 × 130 cm, available today. On 27 October the lowest price on the works page was MX$ 2,336, for a print by Daniel Stara. Prices change, so check each work page.
Verified 27 October 2026 against the websites of Museo Jumex (visit, exhibitions and foundation pages), MUAC (visit, exhibitions and “About us” pages), Museo Tamayo (visit, exhibitions and “About” pages) and Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil (INBAL site: visit, “About” and exhibitions pages).
