Buenos Aires: arteba and the Emerging Scene

arteba 2026, Buenos Aires’s contemporary art fair, now runs from Friday 30 October to Sunday 1 November 2026, with invitation-only pre-openings on Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 October, at the Pabellón Amarillo of La Rural. The foundation that runs it moved the fair from its original 6 to 8 November because of the Pope’s visit to the city, and it keeps a dedicated section, Utopia, for the youngest galleries and artist-run spaces. Every date, hour and name below was read on arteba’s own pages on 26 October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • arteba 2026 is open to the public from Friday 30 October to Sunday 1 November 2026, with pre-openings on 28 and 29 October, according to arteba’s own news page.

When is arteba 2026, and why did it move?

arteba first announced its 2026 edition on 18 August for 6 to 8 November, with pre-openings on 4 and 5 November, at La Rural. On 3 September the foundation published a notice titled “Nueva fecha” and changed the dates to Friday 30 October to Sunday 1 November, with pre-openings on Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 October. If you saw the November dates in a calendar or a fair roundup, that information is out of date.

The reason, in arteba’s words, is the confirmed visit of Pope Leo XIV to Buenos Aires in the first days of November, which will affect traffic and circulation around the La Rural grounds. The foundation says the fair keeps its format, its duration and all of its programme and sections, and that the new public hours are from 14:00 to 21:00. Our own arteba 2026 listing carries the October dates.

The edition matters to the organisers for a second reason. 2026 marks 35 years since Fundación arteba was created, a non-profit that its institutional page says was founded in Buenos Aires on 16 October 1991. For readers following art fairs in Latin America through the season, arteba is the Buenos Aires stop between the Bogotá fair in September and Mexico City’s February week.

Where is arteba, and when can you go?

The fair takes place in the Pabellón Amarillo at La Rural, Av. Sarmiento 2704, in Buenos Aires. The information tab of the fair’s catalogue lists the Plaza Italia station of Subte Line D and the BA Ecobici station 005 at Plaza Italia as ways to arrive, alongside a long list of bus lines and parking inside the grounds.

The first two days are for invited guests. The public opens on Friday 30 October. The table summarises what arteba publishes.

Day Date Access
Wednesday 28 October 2026 Pre-opening for invited guests
Thursday 29 October 2026 Pre-opening for invited guests
Friday 30 October 2026 Public, 14:00 to 21:00
Saturday 31 October 2026 Public, 14:00 to 21:00

Tickets can be bought at the box office at the same address, and visitors can buy a ticket and enter until one hour before closing. The fair lists a 10 per cent saving online with Santander cards, 50 per cent off in person for students and retirees, a two-for-one with Club La Nación, and free entry for children under 10 and for people with a CUD disability certificate (companions pay). We have not listed a ticket price because arteba’s information page does not print one.

Where does emerging work show at arteba?

Start with the structure. arteba’s catalogue describes its Main Section as the category for established galleries recognised for their trajectory. Utopia is a separate section, which the fair describes as its young section, oriented to the most recent production. It brings together galleries, artist-run spaces, non-profit and for-profit organisations and other experimental commercial platforms. The August announcement names spaces in Utopia including BAC, Dicha, Fantasma, Pólvora and Triple Frontera.

Utopia has its own curatorial team: the artist Juan José Cambre and the artist and independent curator Santiago Villanueva. The Main Section was chosen by a separate independent committee of five. It includes Nicolás Barraza of Mite in Buenos Aires, Juan Eyheremendy of Vermelho in São Paulo, Florencia Giordana Braun of Rolf Art in Buenos Aires and the independent curators Florencia Malbrán and Lara Marmor.

One prize speaks directly to early-career work. The Premio en Obra was created in 2008 and, in arteba’s description, recognises the creativity and talent of emerging artists and gallery projects in their first stages. Our guide to what emerging art is explains how we use the term. Here we use arteba’s own wording rather than a definition of ours.

Which talks, prizes and guests shape the fair?

The August announcement says 70 galleries will show work by artists from Argentina and the other countries and territories named above. It also lists a Zona de Diálogo Internacional, a section that combines gallery participation with a programme of talks on contemporary Argentine and Latin American art. The international guests named on arteba’s pages include Galeria Vermelho (São Paulo), Galerie Jocelyn Wolff (Paris), 3+1 Arte Contemporânea (Lisbon) and Cecilia Brunson Projects (London).

The talks are open to the public. On Friday 30 October, at the Auditorio of the Museo Sívori, a panel on curatorial work in the Americas runs from 16:00 to 17:30, followed from 17:30 to 19:00 by one on public and private collecting of Latin American art. The programme is coordinated by Aimé Iglesias Lukin of Americas Society in New York and the art historian and independent curator Francisco Lemus. Another project, Isla de Ediciones, presents a selection of Argentine self-published editorial projects in partnership with Fundación PROA.

The prizes are part of the picture too. The Premio Remax Collection for best stand has two awards for Main Section galleries, and the Premio al Coleccionismo, in its fourth year, honours a figure from the collecting world. Separately, arteba’s acquisitions programme invites museums to visit the fair and buy works. Its page says that over 15 years more than 20 international museums have acquired more than 120 works through it.

How does Buenos Aires connect to Mexico City?

There is a direct Mexican presence on the programme. The collecting panel on Friday 30 October includes Magnolia de la Garza, deputy director of the Colección Isabel & Agustín Coppel in Mexico, alongside Suset Sánchez of the Museo Reina Sofía and Claudia Segura of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Barcelona, with Francisco Lemus moderating. The other panel includes Cuauhtémoc Medina, listed as curator of the 25th Bienal de Arte Paiz in Guatemala.

For a collector based in Mexico City, the practical link is how fairs work wherever they are held. Our guide to buying art at an art fair covers preview days, holds and payment. Our overview of emerging art in Mexico City shows where the same kind of young-gallery programme lives at home.

We are a Mexico City gallery, not an exhibitor at arteba, and this guide reports on a fair we do not run. Some of the artists we work with come from South America. Laura Cuadros, born in Lima in 1988, is one of them. Her oil on wood Como si algo quisiera despertar, from 2026 and 80 × 80 cm, is available now. Works on our works page start at MX$ 2,334 today, for Over The Bridge, a print by Daniel Stara.

What should you check before you go?

Confirm the dates one more time on arteba’s site before you book travel, since this edition has already changed once. Check the hours on the information tab, because Sunday closes an hour earlier than the other days, and read the ticket page for current prices.

Look at the list of galleries in the catalogue before you decide how long to stay. The August announcement and the current catalogue may differ in small ways, as fairs update their lists. If you plan to buy and ship, ask the gallery about shipping, the certificate and any taxes before you commit, as you would at any fair.
