About this work

Mónica Loya paints surreal interiors of feeling, folding dogs, stairs, flowers, and figures into dreamlike, pop-tinged scenes that carry real melancholy beneath their bright surfaces. Nothing Lasts and Everything Hurts wears its ache openly in the title, then lets the image hold it more quietly — the decorative and the sorrowful pressed into the same small frame.

Painted in oil on fabric at an intimate scale, the work concentrates its mood, the compact size pulling the viewer in close. Flattened color and slightly displaced domestic elements give the everyday a tender, unsettled edge, so the small surface ends up carrying a good deal more than it first lets on.
