About this work

Mónica Loya paints surreal interiors of feeling. Working in oil on fabric, she folds dogs, stairs, flowers, and figures into dreamlike, pop-tinged scenes that carry real melancholy beneath their decorative surfaces. La Espera (“the wait”) sits at the heart of that sensibility — a scene of anticipation held in suspension, where waiting becomes its own quiet subject and time seems to slow.

Painted in oil on fabric, the work sets bright, flattened color against a mood of stillness, the pop palette doing little to hide the ache underneath. Familiar domestic elements drift slightly out of logic, giving the everyday a dreamlike, unresolved edge.
