About this work

At The Altar Of The Sun is one of the charged compositions at the center of Gareth Stehr's practice, where he paints in the language of the street. The title's ritual charge — reverence, exposure, heat — feeds the questions his work keeps circling: masculinity, chance, and endurance.

Acrylic and aerosol collide across the surface, acrylic laying down weight and depth while aerosol brings velocity and abrasion. The vertical format pushes the energy upward; control and eruption hold each other in check, and the swagger and grit stay disciplined rather than chaotic.
