About this work

Aurora Kalos returns often to celestial imagery and the strange interior life of her subjects, her portraits sitting between the hyperreal and the surreal. Cassiopeia — named for the constellation — draws on that recurring night-sky motif, holding a figure in the register of something close and impossibly distant at once.

Worked in oil on canvas, the painting reaches for the feeling of a clear mountain sky where every star is visible. Kalos treats the encounter like first sight — familiar and unknown together — and the square 60-centimeter format keeps figure and starfield in balance across the surface.
