About this work

Uncertain Smile examines the fragile line between expression and concealment that Francisco Gonce returns to—an expression suspended between clarity and doubt. Named alongside After Dark and Memories in his body of work, it resists easy reading, confronting subtle emotional shifts rather than fixing a narrative.

Worked in oil and oil pastel on canvas, the 2025 painting lets saturation and gesture coexist: oil for depth, pastel for texture and immediacy, a surface at once deliberate and vulnerable. At 162 × 125 cm its vertical format brings the viewer into direct relation with the work, certainty and hesitation overlapping across it.
