About this work

Couchers de Soleil et Cavaliers 5 comes from Pénélope Barbier's Sunsets and Riders cycle, one of the seasonal series in which she paints the natural world as a state of feeling. Made in 2025, it blends landscape and figuration to hold movement, light, and a sense of passage — the sunset and the rider standing in for transition and the fleeting. It reads as a meditation on time and what remains.

Barbier works in oil and natural pigments on canvas, building an atmospheric surface where tone shifts organically and the palette warms toward dusk. The pigments carry the sense of light and motion embedded in the image, and the composition surfaces slowly under sustained viewing. At 100 × 75 cm it balances impact with restraint.
