About this work

Navigate into the Deep 2 completes the pair begun in the first Navigate into the Deep, extending Raúl Cerrillo's interest in submersion and interior depth. It belongs to the same speculative strain as his mythic large-scale work, but stays close and contained, treating the descent as a subject to return to rather than resolve.

Like its companion, it is oil on canvas at 109 by 75 cm. The palette runs cool and low, with the heaviest pigment pooling near the base of the canvas so weight seems to settle at the bottom of the frame — a second reading of the same downward pull, shifted in key.
