About this work

Poppa's Poppies draws directly on the iconography Jade Tantillo returns to—here the poppy, one of her recurring motifs—to mine memory, affection and emotional inheritance. True to her work, the familiar symbol carries a wink and a lump in the throat at once: humor laid over real tenderness, the vintage surface a disguise for sincere feeling.

Hand-drawn and painted in mixed media on museum-quality canvas, the 2024 work balances drawn structure against layered, tactile paint. Marks read as intentional yet emotionally charged, and the 1.5-inch bordered wrap lets the square canvas sit in space as an object. Meaning surfaces through color and gesture rather than direct narration.
