About this work

Study of Elle is one of Lanise Howard's intimate works on paper, a smaller register within a practice that also runs to large oils like The Green Door and The Reminisce. Across both scales she paints Black figures in moments of memory, threshold, and quiet determination, moving between concealment and revelation. Elle belongs to that lineage — femininity and aspiration held in a single, contained study.

The drawing is made in lavender colored pencil on paper at 14 by 11 inches, and framed in pine painted the same lavender. Colored pencil builds through accumulation rather than force: pressure and repeated line modulate the single hue into depth, so the figure emerges by degrees. The matched frame carries that quiet color out past the sheet.
